Our organisation is proud to have a team of dedicated Behaviour Support Practitioners who bring a wealth of experience, passion, and innovation to their roles. Let’s meet some practitioners and learn more about their journeys and motivations.
Qualifications and Drive: Teresa Robertson recently achieved her Behaviour Support Practitioner qualifications in a remarkably short period. She received her initial practitioner number in April 2024 and reached proficiency by October 2024. Teresa’s drive to achieve this was fuelled by her 20 years of experience in the field, her work alongside behavioural clinicians, multiple relevant qualifications, and her lived experience. Given her extensive background, she felt well-prepared to meet the criteria for the proficient level.
Levels of BSP Qualification: Teresa has completed the core and proficient levels of Behaviour Support Practitioner qualifications. Each level includes seven domains that require understanding and evidence of skills. This rigorous process involves acquiring knowledge and creating a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the application of these skills.
Inspiration and Aspirations: Teresa was inspired to obtain her qualifications because she has always been intrigued by understanding the how and why of people’s behaviours. She enjoys the variety of the BSP role, which allows her to engage in activities with individuals, connect with their support networks, and take a person-centred approach to what works or doesn’t work for them. Creating behavioural support plans and training teams to implement these plans brings her great satisfaction as she witnesses positive changes and goal achievements.
Draw to the Role: Emily Els was drawn to the role of Behaviour Support Practitioner because it offered the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. She enjoys developing tailored strategies that empower individuals, helping them overcome challenges and thrive in their daily environments. The positive impact of this support is immensely fulfilling for her.
Support Provided: As a Behaviour Support Practitioner, Emily focuses on understanding and addressing specific behavioural needs. She creates detailed plans that include intervention strategies and support, working closely with clients and their support networks. This hands-on approach differs from a Support Coordinator, who primarily assists with accessing services and resources.
Passion for the Role: Emily loves the problem-solving and creativity involved in the BSP role. Each person’s needs are unique, allowing her to craft individualised plans that reflect their strengths and goals. She finds it incredibly rewarding to see how small, consistent changes can improve someone’s daily life and overall well-being.
Motivation to Become a BSP: Drew Rogers has always been fascinated by societal behaviours and group dynamics. His interest deepened while working in community and disability services, where he noticed the isolating and dangerous aspects of certain behaviours and their impact on others. With over 10 years of experience in homelessness, disability services, and mental health, Drew felt his knowledge and experience were valuable assets in the BSP space.
Support Provided: Drew offers a well-informed and empathetic approach to complex presentations. He is not one for the status quo and enjoys exploring new paths with clients. His willingness to venture into uncharted territory is one of the exciting aspects of his work.
Excitement for the Role: Drew looks forward to working with engaging and inspiring individuals, both participants and colleagues. He finds the dynamic and evidence-based nature of the BSP field to be intellectually stimulating. Drew is particularly excited by the frontier scientific fields like neurobiology and psychopathology and their increasingly holistic approach to understanding behaviours.
Our Behaviour Support Practitioners are committed to making a positive impact, and their diverse experiences and dedication are invaluable to our team. We are excited to see the differences they will continue to make in the lives of those we support.
